Everything You Need to Know About Tooth Sensitivity

Do you have sensitive teeth? If you do, then you are not alone. Almost 50% of the world’s population suffers from tooth sensitivity.

Tooth sensitivity is also known as dentin hypersensitivity. Whenever you experience a sharp temporary pain or sensation while drinking or eating anything hot or cold, chances are you have sensitive teeth. The pain is usually sharp and immediate.

There are many causes of sensitive teeth and generally, it occurs due to receding gums or periodontal disease. The pain that you experience is due to the exposure of dentin (layer of a tooth underneath the enamel) after the wearing of tooth enamel. In the absence of the protective layer of teeth, any sensation or pain that you feel is due to the direct signals sent by the exposed nerve endings to the brain.

Main causes of tooth sensitivity

  1.  Brushing too hard or over brushing
  2. Gum disease or periodontal disease
  3. Teeth grinding
  4. Cracked tooth or filling
  5. Gum recession
  6. Excessive use of teeth whitening products
  7. Tooth erosion due to acidic foods and beverages
